If we look at the early history of the Indian subcontinent and Bangladesh, we can see that the name of Raja Rammohun Roy will be at the forefront of all the changes that have taken place in the society to move the society forward.
The reason for this is that Raja Rammohun Roy is fully responsible for the changes that have taken place in the social, cultural and educational lands of Bengal in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Many others worked with him at that time. But he made the start. Raja Rammohun Roy sowed the seeds of the society we see in Bengal today, the trend of change in the field of education. His contribution is more memorable and important, because at that time the English were more dominant. Everything was done under their direction. Undoubtedly, it was a very courageous act to express and propagate one's ideology as a Bengali at such a time.
Fifteen years after the battle of Palashi, Raja Rammohun Roy was born on 22 May 182 in Radhanagar, Bengal. He was born in an aristocratic Brahmin family. He could have lived an aristocratic life if he wished to work under the East India Company. But without that he went out of Bengal. Went to different countries, came in contact with the culture, society and politics of those countries.
Besides learning Bengali, English or Hindi, he learned Persian, Arabic, Hebrew and Greek to connect with people in other countries. He mastered the literature of his own country as well as the culture of the western world and the literature they created. Not only that, He also had a vast knowledge of the literary works of other countries in the eastern part of the world. Due to his studies on various subjects in different countries, he has been able to critique the socio-economic conditions of the Indian subcontinent and Bengal and to express his views on the political ideology there.
Rammohun Roy constantly spoke against some social norms throughout his life. One of them is caste or society stratification and caste hatred and the other is satidah practice. In his time, the effect of these two practices was chaos in the society and lack of social values and consciousness. He suppressed it with a strong hand.
Raja Rammohun Roy not only educated himself, but also translated Sanskrit Upanishads into modern Bengali so that other people in the society could get the light of proper education. He did this to keep the people of the society away from superstitions and some cruel social customs. At that time the lower class people of the society could be easily influenced by someone who was educated by speaking Upanishads. Since these were written in Sanskrit, many could not read them. He did this so that everyone could study in their own familiar language. His efforts made important contributions to social reform.
Another important task of his was to travel abroad and to acquaint the people of Bengal with the work being done there. He knew that the people of this country could never prosper without education. In order to keep pace with the developed countries, we have to think like them, understand their work, adapt ourselves to their culture. Raja Rammohun Roy had a keen interest in the culture of the western world and the knowledge they were constantly building there.
In his time, science was followed by the post-Newton era and a renaissance era of industrial creation. Then the westerners are trying to improve themselves in science. King Rammohun Roy felt that what was happening in science in the West, especially in Europe, could never be discarded and could not be ignored.
That is why he insisted on including English in his studies when he returned to the country and told the people of the society that in order to take their country to the peak of development, they must learn English as well as Sanskrit. If we review the picture of that time now, we will see how much difference there was between Bengal and the Indian subcontinent and Europe in terms of science, which Rammohun Roy understood then.
The aristocracy of Europe was also instrumental in the development of science in Europe during Newton's time. The Royal Society and others like it promoted new scientific discoveries and patronized scientists. On the other hand, there was no one in Bengal to do such a thing. The English also had a kind of reluctance to improve the people of this country. By employing the people here, they were increasing the financial viability of their country.
Rammohun Roy had already realized that inequality was gradually being created between the two countries in science. So when the English talked of building a Sanskrit college in Calcutta, he vehemently opposed it. There he proposed not just culture, but science, history, economics, Geography should also be taught.
His idea was that in order to keep pace with the knowledge of the West and to understand their ever-new discoveries and ideas, the children of the subcontinent and Bengal should also be given full knowledge of these subjects so that they could develop their country and compete with other developed countries. Such a far-sighted idea of his started a new revolution in the society of our country.
Many believe that Raja Rammohun Roy blindly followed the West, but this was not the case at all. He strongly protested when the Hindu community was criticized by the Christian community at different times. He learned Greek and Hebrew to protest properly. He was also in favor of the independent thinking of the people of Bengal.
That is why he also formed a religious society called Brahma Samaj, where independent thought was discussed and their beliefs were spread all over the society. Even when he went to give a lecture in England on behalf of the Emperor of Delhi in 1830, his words and discussions fully revealed the knowledge-rich country of the Indian subcontinent. This great Bengali scholar and social reformer died in England on 26 September 1833.
